Uckfield stalwart dies, aged 95Thursday, 9 April 2009 
DORA Nunn, who has died aged 95, devoted her life to helping community groups in Uckfield.A service of thanksgiving for her life was held at Holy Cross Church last week. Dora, from The Drive, married James in 1937. She was involved with Girl Guides and bonfire and carnival societies. She rarely missed a bonfire procession and made torches, handled committee work and organised carnival dances. One year she grabbed the collar of a troublesome youth and threw him out when he was too much for the local bobbies. She was on the fundraising committee for the original day centre and got stuck into the toughest chores. Cllr Dorothy Sparks said: 'She was usually half-way through a job while others were still talking about it.' When the premises were lost to Tesco, Dora held membership together and was soon back on another fundraising committee to buy the old library. She led sponsored walks and once the new centre opened she was heavily involved in its day-to-day running, opening in the morning and locking up every afternoon. Cllr Sparks added: 'She was a leader who was not afraid to speak her mind. 'She was always cheerful and her memory was so remarkable she never needed to make notes or look up a telephone number once she had it. If she could do anybody a good turn she would – many people have reasons to be grateful for her kindness.'http://www.sussexexpress.co.uk/ |
