Bonfire society needs support from publicFriday, 5 June 2009 ALMOST 200 years of tradition could come to an end if townspeople don't rally in support of an Uckfield society. Uckfield Bonfire and Carnival Society was founded 188 years ago and stages its annual fete and car boot sale in Luxford Field on July 5 this year. The bonfire and firework display takes place on September 4 in Holy Cross School fields and the carnival is the following day. Organiser Carol Watts Arnold told the Express: 'The credit crunch is affecting everyone, including us. 'Fundraising is proving hard this year as people have so many demands on their income. 'It's such a great event and we don't want to lose it.' Carol said the carnival costs about £6,000 to organise and gives the whole town a lot of pleasure. She said the the town council gives much-needed support but she hopes local people can help out by getting behind the fete. 'We would love to see lots of arena events, stalls from groups and stands. 'We already have loads of good raffle prizes but we'd be delighted to receive any more. With the economic situation the way it is, we are finding it very hard indeed.'
